I liked "a long-term stress is compounded by a short term shock."
The same forces that are driving mass-extinction in non-human species are effectively annihilating most of the human species. Most people now live in a state of extreme marginality: they have left the land for the city, and compete in a mutually destructive race to the bottom.
Only middle-class or wealthy citizens are in a position to modify this trajectory by their living and/or consumption habits, and the actions of these few is likely marginal. The vast majority of people are too poor and powerless to do anything other than what is expedient for survival.

The driving force behind this headlong destruction is the emerging oligarchy of the super-rich, who control and are the beneficiaries of the power of the state. With the exception of a few European countries, this is the rule.

One of your best blogs yet. Bravo.

But the cynic in me wonders whether humans really even care about future mass extinctions, especially one that may happen at some future, obviously non specified, time point?! How can we make these burning issues more tangible and meaninful to Joe Blogs living now? What issues will be facing us or at least our kids that we can use as change agents? thoughts...
