I fully support 4 day work week! Or alternatively, if i'm to work 5 days, i need 3 days off for myself and one for organising, cleaning, sorting shit out. So a 9 day week! :)

Would be interested to know if there really could be an ecological argument for a 4 day week, since there's a possibility that the effect it would have to raise overall employment (numbers of people in work, not total hours worked) could mean that there is people that currently buy/fly little step up their consumption to the detriment of the environment. This would, of course, be counterbalanced by the effects you write about above, but unclear to me which effect might be strongest. Guess I'll have to dedicate some time to reading the NEF paper you cite. Interesting idea though, and certainly one that makes perfect sense from a human quality of life point of view. Agree that any drive towards the principal would need to be a the context of a wider cultural shift away from consumption levels as a measure of well-being, to one which places a much greater value on free time.

So I guess firstly you must redefine 'work' then redefine 'reward' then agree who can work less... Nurses, Teachers, Single Parents with bills to pay, Farmers, Self-employed mortgage and business owners possibly not, but how to placate those that claim this isn't "fair"??
And then how do you enforce/protect it? No overtime payment = abuse by management or indifference by staff. Ok in a restaurant not so much by emergency services. Shift system may get round this and centrally collecxted flat tax.
Its a big dream oft tried through different programmes including parental working rights, EU directives and some offices (including at mine) allow his for more senior staff with kids.

The first step to working less, (at least in the rabidly consumerist West), is WANTING less. When you want less, you spend less and then you need to work less. Check out these guys for inspiration.
