How choosing the right home can play a part in green living

wind_turbine_houseFor most us, buying a house is possibly the biggest and most important purchase we will make in our lives. This means that we have some tough decisions to make to find a property that is right for our needs, as well as numerous other factors, such as transport links, proximity to local amenities, the local area and, of course, the price.

Something more people are seemingly taking into account when house-hunting is how green their new house is. A survey conducted on behalf of Pod-Space found that 36.2% of those taking part said that their decision when buying a property would depend on environmental factors. These factors were having a source of green energy, be it solar panels installed on the roof or a wind turbine to generate electricity.

Thinking carefully

"Bio-architecture" is where its at

In order for a home to be seen as environmentally-friendly, it shouldn’t just be down to having a renewable energy source. Things such as loft insulation, double-glazed windows, natural light or even proximity to public transport can all affect how green a property is.

Aside from the property itself, green living also encompasses recycling. Any home that’s part of a regular recycling route are also worth considering. In the same survey, 72% of people across the UK said that they did so because they wanted to make a difference to the environment. Interestingly, just 1.3% of people said that they didn’t recycle.

This shows that the environment is something many of us care about, whether it’s because we want our waste to be disposed of in an efficient manner or if we want to rely on energy generated from natural resources in our own back gardens. What’s more, the majority of those surveyed want to influence those around them to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle. Just over four in five people surveyed said they would encourage friends and family to live a little greener.

From encouraging those around us to recycle to choosing a home that’s energy efficient, the survey showed that more and more people are becoming conscious of their effect on the environment.
