The view from Samakanda
Samakanda
Samakanda is a spectacular holiday destination, tea estate and rainforest experience within easy reach of Galle, Sri Lanka. It was founded by Rory Spowers who wrote about it in his book A Year in Green Tea and Tuk Tuks.
There are three bungalows nestled within a rainforest setting, 30 acres of tea, a stream that can be swum in and lots of beautiful walks and wildlife experiences.
The bustling town of Galle and the beautiful beaches of the South Coast are easily accessible by: car, scooter, tuk tuk or bus.
The Role
A manager is sought to welcome and look after guests and to work with the local team to make sure their needs are met. This may also suit an adventurous couple.
There are language barriers and other challenges to overcome so the person needs to be a self-starter, capable of solving challenges independently and someone who enjoys life in a relatively remote setting.
Life at Samakanda
Samakanda is a place of outstanding natural beauty and full of wildlife. However, living conditions are simple especially in the lower bungalow where the manager will stay when there are guests in the top bungalow. There are lots of bugs, sometimes the power goes out and unexpected situations can arise.
If there are not guests staying the manager is welcome to explore the local area and go to the coast. However, when guests are there the manager will need to be on site to make sure they have a good stay.
Your skills
- experience in hospitality, travel or adventure
- able to operate in a Sinhala culture
- happy to spend time alone in a remote place
Remuneration
The role is unpaid and the manager must make their own way to Samakanda. However, They can receive 20% commission on all guests visits they pull in.
