Bulky household waste collections
Are you paying to much for your bulky waste collections?
Unfortunately the answer for many across the UK is a resounding ‘YES!’ It is this lack of value that leads to an estimated seven million mattresses being thrown onto landfills each and every year. This is a massive contribution to the growing environmental damage we are all culpable of and something that central and local government seem either incapable or unwilling to address.
It is for this very reason that we at Collect Your Old Bed (CYOB) decided it was time to highlight the problem and show that there are alternatives to the local offering. We have compared bulky waste collection fees across the United Kingdom, to give insight into exactly how local authorities are handling waste collection. We can then compare the areas that offer value, to those that charge higher prices.
Data notes: Prices are a minimum charge and may cover more than one item. The cost is for standard non-electrical and non-reusable bulky goods. Prices are for local residents and do not include discounts or concessions.
Bulky waste can be incredibly difficult to dispose of, especially when you experience government legislation and local authority restrictions. We would all love to be greener, disposing of our waste responsibility and recycling where we can but, as our research shows, you are often asked to do so at great personal expense, with costs that people simply can’t afford. The problem with this is that it is the environment that suffers as a result.
Where are the Highest and Lowest Costs?
If you are a lucky resident of Northern Ireland, there is a good chance your bulky waste collection comes free of charge, courtesy of responsible district councils in areas such as:
- Omagh
- Dungannon and
- Derry
Equally, you can find free collection in:
- North Devon
- Leicester and
- Newham in London
These are regrettably exceptions to the rule, and many more councils around the country rely instead on charging extortionate rates. If, for example, you are a resident of:
- Wealdon Council on the South Coast
- Central Bedfordshire Council or
- Argyll and Bute Council in Scotland
Then be prepared to pay in excess of £50 for your bulky waste collection, with conditions ranging from a maximum of only 3 items, to additional charges if your pick up time exceeds 10 minutes.
What are the Alternatives?
The alternatives fall into two categories. For perfectly serviceable bulky waste, many people will choose to donate to charity. This is of course ideal for furniture that can be reused. The problem with this is often transporting the waste though, as well as the quality. If you haven’t the space in your car or van, or the bed and mattress are no longer suitable for use, then this option isn’t for you. Instead, Collect Your Old Bed (CYOB) can help.
Our prices start from as little as £9.99 and include the collection and subsequent disposal of unwanted beds and mattresses. If you’re finding it difficult to communicate with your local authority, or are unwilling to pay their elevated prices, then we offer the perfect solution.
As well as the cost advantage of utilising our service, our green credentials also make us a popular choice UK wide. Every product we collect is fully recycled, and we mean fully. We leave no waste material, reusing everything for a greener waste disposal strategy. Recycling options include:
Mattress Foam, ground to make carpet padding
Cotton and Wool fabrics and fibres recycled back into the furniture industry
Steel Springs continually recycled without ever affecting the performance
Foundation Wood chipped for use in animal bedding or biomass fuel
