“Resurgence remains one of the best antidotes to the superficial banalities and mindless materialism that grips contemporary society.”
― Jonathon Porritt
Resurgence Magazine, described as the “spiritual and artistic flagship of the green movement,” turns 50 in 2016. Now published as Resurgence & Ecologist, the magazine is a world-leader in environmental publishing. To celebrate this milestone it is now possible to gift a one year membership to The Resurgence Trust, sending six issues of Resurgence & Ecologist a year together with special gift cards.
Resurgence was founded in 1966 by John Papworth but editorship soon passed to Satish Kumar – the legendary Jain monk who walked 8,000 miles to the capitals of four nuclear-armed countries – campaigning for disarmament and peace. Recently, Greg Neale took over the helm but Satish is still deeply involved. Other notable contributors have included E.F. Schumacher, E. P. Thompson, Ivan Illich, R. D. Laing, Martin Ryle, Theodore Roszak, Fritjof Capra, Wendell Berry, Vandana Shiva, James Lovelock, Antony Gormley and the Dalai Lama.
Satish’s activism for peace has always infused the magazine and is more relevant today then ever. In one of his books he writes:
“Someone, somewhere, needs to take courage to break the cycle of violence. Forgiveness is superior to justice. Being kind and compassionate to those who are good to you is easy. True forgiveness and compassion come only when one is able to forgive even those who have committed barbaric acts. If Angulimala is capable of renouncing violence, then tell me, your Majesty: is your civilized society also capable of being truly civilized and renouncing violence?”
― Satish Kumar, The Buddha and the Terrorist
The magazine comes out every two months covering environmental issues, engaged activism, philosophy, arts and ethical living. It is always lavishly illustrated and brimming with inspiration.
“Time spent reading Resurgence & Ecologist is something that I savour. Always blissfully designed and presented, it challenges and inspires in equal measure.”
―Joanna Lumley
