When we think of the various lottery organisations throughout the world, it is easy to forget just how much they can contribute to charitable causes and great endeavours to help others. For the money raised with each ticket purchases, money will not only go towards prizes, but countless charitable causes too. For example, did you know that the National Lottery in the UK has raised £34 billion and contributed this towards 450,000 charities?
So, each time you buy a lottery ticket, whether you do it online on theLotter or in an offline outlet, part of the money goes to making the world a better place. Here are just a few examples of the countless good deeds that have come as a result of lottery funding:
Local Food Projects
The Big Lottery Fund is the charity arm of the National Lottery of the UK, and has donated millions to various local food projects. The Local Food program funds countless food-related projects that can help improve local communities.
The Wick Court Food Farm is one such example of this, which was set up to help educate children that live in cities about the benefits of locally produced foods. They are provided the opportunity to grow and then harvest various different foods, which they can then take home to cook and eat, learning a lot about agriculture and the benefits of healthy eating.
Environmental Projects
Another large component of lottery funding is towards protecting, restoring and educating others about the environment. The National Lottery funds countless projects relating to environment, including the Your Seas and People and Wildlife.
Your Seas is based around marine conservation and works in correlation with various charities associated with this. The main hope of this program is to educate people on the dangers facing local marine wildlife, such as whales, dolphins, and porpoises, particularly how their habitats are in dangerous. They hold various exhibitions and special events to help promote and educate others about marine conservation.
People and Wildlife is a similar project, with the main different being that it hope to educate people regarding their local wildlife and environments, and how they can work together to protect them. Thousands of children and hundreds of adults have visited the workshops and events put on by this project, doing a great job of spreading awareness about the importance of local environments.
The Arizona Lottery in the United States managed to donate over $10 million dollars towards environmental causes in the state of Arizona in 2014 alone. Funds were given to help protect the wildlife of the region, along with increased environmental education services.
Improving Local Parks
The Heritage Lottery Fund in the UK has donated billions of dollars to almost 40,000 causes, many of which are the restoration or establishment of local parks. In general, the charity is focused on donated to causes that are important to the heritage of the British public, such as parks and wildlife conservation.
The Raphael Park project helped to restore and improve 17.8 hectares of parkland in Havering, London, allowing for the conservation of the wildlife found in this park, as well has enhancing the natural beauty of the park and any facilities available.
It is not the first park restored through this funding, as parks throughout Scotland, England, and Wales have all saw projects aiming to help further improve local parks so that the communities can better enjoy them. Besides the above-mentioned parks, the British capital city has enjoyed the benefit of lottery funding so many times, monuments being renovated, attractions restored and re-opened to the public that one can even take a lottery-themed tour of London.
